Head-on collisions are among the more serious accidents you can experience on the road, but there are a lot of steps you can take to stay safe. To make sure drivers in the Plainfield, Indianapolis, Fishers, and Bloomington areas stay safe during an accident, Andy Mohr Collision Center is here with this guide.

Steps After a Head-On Collision

  • Stop your car and shut off your engine
  • Exit your car when it’s safe
  • Make sure everyone is in good condition
  • Call first responders as soon as possible

What Happens During a Head-On Collision?

A head on collision can happen for any number of reasons. One of the most common reasons for a head-on collision is poor traction in the snow. If your vehicle skids out and loses control, you may find yourself driving into the other lane.

If the head-on collision is bad enough your car will deploy air bags to cushion the impact. Your vehicle is designed to maximize safety during head-on collisions due to air bags and crumble zones. Thanks to the intuitive design of modern vehicles, it’s easy for your vehicle to absorb the force of a collision to keep you secure in an accident.

What’s Damaged in a Head-On Collision?

The most obvious damage in a head-on collision is going to be your hood and front bumper. Your front end will need a lot of parts replacements to make sure that everything is in proper condition. It’s also common to find damage to the frame and alignment as well, which will affect your vehicle’s handling.

Beyond that, your engine will likely be damaged from a head-on collision. You may need to have your engine rebuilt during the repair process. Finally, any airbags that go off will have to be replaced as well.

What to Do After a Head-On Collision

If you’re in a head-on collision, the first thing you should do is remain calm, put your vehicle in park, and shut it off. When you feel it’s safe to do so, exit your car and call first responders to take care of the situation. The police will be able to direct traffic and have your vehicle towed—and take a police report that will come in handy when you go to your insurance company.

Is My Car Totaled After a Head-On Collision?

It’s a common idea that your car is totaled after a head-on collision, but that isn’t necessarily true. A total loss is determined to be when the damage to a vehicle costs more than a certain percentage of the car itself. Oftentimes, that percentage is around 70%, meaning that the more valuable your car is, the less likely it will be a total loss.

This means that if your car is a newer model or if it’s a higher trim, it’s less likely to be a total loss. Typically, older vehicles are more likely to be considered total losses because their total loss limit is set lower.
