What to Do If You Hydroplane

No one likes to drive in the rain. In fact, most of us will avoid going outside in the Fishers, Indianapolis, Plainfield, and Bloomington areas when it’s raining, if we can. However, being an adult often makes this impossible since we still have to get to work, get the kids to school, or keep our plans with some friends.

When you drive in the rain, it requires more attention paid to the road, but there are some situations that are unavoidable, especially when the rain is coming down fast and hard. Sometimes, a hydroplane situation occurs without any way to stop it. However, at Andy Mohr Collision Center, we want you to know how to get through it.

Powering Through

A hydroplane can be a harrowing experience, but we can help take a little bit of the pressure off of you with some simple directions to follow. When your car starts to hydroplane, it’s because your tires can’t handle the amount of water they’re encountering. The first thing to do is to stay calm and remember cooler heads prevail.

Next, you’ll want to ease off the gas. You do not want to hit the brakes. As you’re slowing down and your car is beginning to get some traction again, you’ll want to steer the wheel in the direction you want the car to go. At this point, you can begin braking slowly, as you still do not want to slam on the brakes.

Why Did My Car Hydroplane?

While some reasons for hydroplaning are the fault of poor drainage and other road factors, some can stem from potential issues with the tires. Here are some tips for avoiding a hydroplane situation:

  • Keep Your Tires Properly Inflated – With the addition of tire pressure monitoring to newer cars, it is pretty easy to keep up with this.
  • Maintain a Tire Rotation Schedule – Your tires should be rotated every six to seven months, which will help protect your vehicle.
  • Replace Old Tires – If your tires are looking old or you know they are past the mileage recommendation for their lifespan, it’s time for a tire replacement.
