So, you’re driving in the Plainfield or Indianapolis area on the highway and the car ahead of you kicks up a pebble that hits your windshield. Right then, you can see a small crack has formed from the impact of the pebble. Will your insurance cover the repairs to your windshield?

At Andy Mohr Collision Center, we want Fishers and Bloomington drivers to learn more about their options when looking at windshield repairs. Read more to learn what you can do when you find a crack in your windshield.

Collision vs Natural Event

The short answer to the question on if you have coverage is yes, but it can depend. It’s really all about what kind of coverage you have. For example, if you’re in a collision and your windshield cracks due to an impact, collision coverage will take care of you.

However, if your windshield receives a crack from a pebble or a branch, you’re going to want to have comprehensive coverage. This coverage protects you in the event that something small and unexpected happens to your car.

Either way, you’re likely going to have to pay a deductible before your insurance covers the rest. However, this raises some questions as to when you will need to work with insurance in the first place.

When to File a Claim on Auto Glass Replacement

As we said before, you’re likely going to have to pay a deductible for your insurance to pay for the rest of the repair. However, in cases where the crack is less than six inches long and your deductible isn’t exceptionally low, the repair cost may not be high enough for an insurance claim.

Now, if your windshield cracked because you were in an accident, you should still file an insurance claim. However, if it was a simple matter of your windshield cracking from debris, it might be better to take care of it yourself if the crack is small.

In many cases where the crack is less than six inches long, many auto glass companies can simply repair the windshield. Windshield repairs are simple procedures, so you don’t need to get a whole new pane of glass applied to your vehicle.

Don’t Wait to File a Claim

When you submit an insurance claim on a damaged windshield, your first priority should be to contact your insurance company as soon as possible. Taking time in submitting a claim can make it harder for the insurance company to cover you.

Another reason not to wait on filing a claim is that if you have a crack on your windshield, it can grow over time. Windshield glass is tough, but a small crack can grow from a minor repair to a full-on replacement very easily. It’s best to be on top of your repairs in the event that you notice a crack in your windshield.
