If you’ve never been in an accident before, you may be unsure about the different steps to take or how to make sure your claim is processed correctly.

Our team at Andy Mohr Collision Center boasts years of collision repair experience, and we want to offer that knowledge to drivers in Plainfield, Indianapolis, Fishers, and Bloomington, IN.

If you have any questions about deductibles, and whether you can repair your car without paying one, our team is here to help.

What is a Deductible?

A deductible is the amount of money you need to pay out of pocket when making a collision repair on your car. Your insurance company will then cover the rest of the bill either directly, or will send you a check for the remainder of the repair amount.

Typically, when signing up for auto insurance, you will choose what you would like your deductible to be, so you can find the price that best suits your lifestyle. Each type of coverage you choose will have its own deductible, so you can customize as you see fit.

The two main types of coverage are collision and comprehensive––which encompasses damage from events outside of your control, such as vandalism and acts of nature.

You may want to choose the same amount for each deductible, or go with a lower amount for one you think has a higher chance of occurring. For example, a lower deductible for comprehensive coverage in areas around Indiana may be best, since snowstorms occur frequently.

When Do You Pay Your Deductible?

If you’ve been in an incident where you are at fault, then you most likely need to pay your deductible. However, if your insurance company has declared you not at fault or the other driver has taken responsibility, then most likely your deductible will be covered by their insurance, instead. If you have any questions about this process, reach out to your insurance rep to learn more.

If you have been in an accident, you also have the option to pay out of pocket for the repairs. This is a good option if the amount of damages doesn’t exceed your deductible.
