When the wind blow hard around your house and your vehicle is parked on the streets of the Plainfield, Bloomington, Indianapolis, and Fishers areas, there’s always a concern that an errant limb or the whole tree may fall on your car. It could happen, but there are ways to handle this type of incident with ease.

At Andy Mohr Collision Center, we’re available to help in this type of situation. Not only can we fix minor scratches, dents, or dings in your car’s finish, but we’re also set up to do major repairs, which includes broken glass, frame damage, and other issues that can be caused if Mother Nature causes a felled tree on your vehicle.

The Proper Steps to Take

If you’ve had the bad luck to have a tree fall on a vehicle on your property, there are several steps to take to handle the repairs to your vehicle. They are:

  • Document with Photos – The first step in this situation is to take photos of your vehicle with the tree still on it. Take photos from every angle, so you can to try and document all the damage done by the tree.
  • Remove Debris – If you can remove part of the tree from your vehicle safely and without causing harm to yourself or further damage to the car, then do so. By doing so, you can determine what damage has been done. For example, if there are branches across your windshield and you can remove them, you’ll be better able to tell what issues the tree may have caused. Take photos at this stage as well.
  • Call Your Insurance Company – If you have full coverage on your vehicle, including comprehensive coverage, contact your insurance company and give them the full story of what happened. They’ll likely send an agent to your home to check out the damage and then you’ll be able to dispatch a tow truck .

Will My Insurance Cover the Damage?

If you have full insurance coverage, your damages should be covered. As long as the tree fell directly onto your vehicle and not on your garage where the car was housed, your car insurance will likely cover expenses, but you should be prepared to pay the deductible for this service.
Be sure to check your policy limits and ensure that you haven’t already gone over them with a previous claim for the year. At this point, you’re also going to want to make sure you have comprehensive coverage since this is the type of policy that is going to cover acts of nature. If you don’t carry this type of coverage, your car insurance will likely not cover the damage and your repairs will be out of pocket.
