You’re coming up on an intersection, and you see the traffic light turn green. All good to go, you think, so you continue driving through—but suddenly, out of the corner of your eye, you see a car hurtling toward you. In that moment, you know it: A side-impact collision is imminent. No matter how they happen, these collisions can do a number on your car. At Andy Mohr Collision Center, we want help Plainfield, Indianapolis, Fishers, and Bloomington drivers address possible damage to their vehicles.

What Is a Side-Impact Crash?

As the above scenario implies, a side-impact crash occurs when one vehicle’s front end impacts the side of another vehicle. Also known as “T-bone” or “broadside” collisions, these accidents have varying ranges of severity. The most extreme examples involve one vehicle hurtling headlong into the side of another. In other cases, the collision is a sideswipe accident, in which one vehicle swerves into the side of another. This might occur when changing lanes or merging with traffic.  Weather is often a factor in these collisions. A vehicle could swerve out of control on a wet or icy street and hit—or be hit—by another vehicle, for instance.

Damage Caused in Side-Impact Collisions

As is often the case in accidents, the amount and type of damage you’ll see in a side-impact collision will depend on the particulars of your situation. The speed at which both vehicles are traveling as well as the type of vehicles involved are factors. Side-impact crashes tend to be more damaging than frontal collisions because the drivers involved have little to no warning. It can be more difficult to take evasive accident and protect yourself as you would in a frontal collision (i.e., by braking). After a side impact, you may need:

  • Car door repair
  • Unibody frame repair
  • Alloy wheel repair
  • Paintless dent repair
