Windshield Repair vs Replacement

If you’ve ever driven with streaks or dirt on your windshield, then you know what a nuisance an obstructed view can be. So, naturally, a chip or crack—something that can’t simply be washed away—is going to be far worse.

When faced with windshield damage, Plainfield, Indianapolis, Fishers, and Bloomington, Indiana, drivers may be curious whether glass repair or replacement is the solution. This helpful article by the Andy Mohr Collision Centers team may just help you decide.

Repairing and Replacing: Pros and Cons

On any given day, there’s no telling when another car’s wheel might kick up a stone and send it flying towards your windshield. This could happen on the highway, on a backroad—anywhere.

Nicks and cracks in the glass can majorly obstruct your view on the road. Not only is this annoying, but it’s also patently unsafe. So, you’ll want to have those blemishes taken care of as soon as possible.

When to Repair Your Windshield

Many auto glass repair shops these days can easily take care of quarter-sized chips or cracks (about three inches or so in length). However, some advanced shops can handle cracks that are as big as 12 inches.

A repair is obviously going to be less costly than a full-on replacement, but it may pose some drawbacks. For one thing, a crack or chip, particularly on the outer edges of the windshield, can compromise the structural integrity of the glass. Even after a repair, it may be at risk.

That’s not to mention, you’ll notice that the point of the crack or chip repair will remain slightly warped after the fact. If the damage was considerable or right in front of the driver’s seat, this may continually obstruct your view.

When to Replace Your Windshield

With a full windshield repair, you don’t have to worry about any of the glass warping or reduced structural integrity that might come with a repair. So, if the damage was substantial, this is going to be the best option for you.

The only major drawback here is that a new windshield is quite an investment. Your wallet is going to feel this job more than it would a mere repair.

We Cover Auto Glass Repair

Whether it be a mere windshield repair or a complete replacement that you’re looking for, our collision centers can take care of both.

First and foremost, our skilled technicians are equipped with comprehensive diagnostic technologies. They’ll assess your car and let you know if the glass damage is bad enough to warrant a complete replacement.

Second, they have all the tools and replacement parts necessary to take care of these jobs in a timely manner. Auto glass work is something they do often, so they should have everything on hand already.

That being said, a windshield replacement may keep your car in the shop longer than a repair. During that time, we can recommend a car rental service for you, so you can have wheels while your vehicle is in the shop.
