While no one wants to be involved in a car accident, fender benders can happen in the Plainfield, Indianapolis, Fishers, and Bloomington areas. While the damage to the exterior of your car may be evident, there can be underlying damage to certain systems that can’t be detected right away.

For this reason, it’s recommended that you have a reputable service center check your vehicle out, even if you think there is minimal damage. At Andy Mohr Collision Center, we have a full team of highly trained professionals who can walk you through any damage that may have been done to your car as a result of your recent fender bender.

Signs of Damage

You may only notice a couple of dents, dings, or scratches from your fender bender, but there could be more going on underneath the surface. Other signs of internal damage may include:

  • Difficulty Steering – Sometimes, parts of the steering column can be damaged during an accident. This can make it difficult to steer or you may hear a grinding sound when you make a turn.
  • Grinding Sounds – If you’re hearing a grinding sound or a constant rubbing, this may be from the wheel well being damaged. As the wheel wells are usually connected to or around the front quarter panels, the grinding may be caused by buckling in that area.
  • Hesitation in Shifting – If your car has an automatic transmission, you may notice it isn’t shifting the way it used to. Sometimes, the transmission can be damaged during a small accident without your knowledge and you’ll notice a slight hiccup when it used to shift seamlessly.

Other Potential Damage

When dents and dings are not repaired promptly, no matter how minor they may be, they can allow rust to set it on the surface of your vehicle. Over time, this exposed area can spread and allow rust to eat away at the paint and surface areas of your car. Not only does it damage the appearance, but it can also do further damage to the car.

If you’re noticing any of the signs we’ve mentioned, it’s time to get your car checked out. If your transmission, steering column, or the body of your car was damaged during the accident, this potentially could be the responsibility of the insurance company to cover.
